Even minor bruises are no fun; but, bumps and bangs, especially while raising children, are part of life. When an area of the body is hit hard, the small blood vessels (capillaries) near the surface of the skin break and blood leaks into the surrounding tissue. This forms a discolored (black, blue, or red) area that is tender to the touch and usually a little swollen. As it heals, it may turn yellow; and, it often looks worse before it looks better.

Bruising may also occur while taking certain medications, or with various medical treatments (I sometimes bruise when I have my blood drawn, especially if the person drawing blood is inexperienced).

Some people bruise more easily than others, even from just a slight or unnoticed bump. Women tend to bruise more easily than men; and, as we all age. Several factors can contribute to easy bruising, including:

Aging capillaries. Over time, the tissues supporting these vessels weaken, and capillary walls become more fragile and prone to rupture.

Thinning skin. With age, your skin becomes thinner and loses some of the protective fatty layer that helps cushion your blood vessels from injury. Excessive exposure to the sun accelerates this process.

[If you experience serious or frequent bruising, please see your doctor, as this could indicate a more serious health issue.]

Essential oils can sooth a bruise. Oils like cypress help to support normal capillary wall strength, while oils like helichrysum help support the normal reabsorption of the blood that has collected in the tissue. Geranium is amazing (read our story HERE); and lavender and frankincense are soothing and restorative to the skin!

The following blend is easy to make, supports normal circulation, soothes the skin, and supports the body’s natural process of reabsorbing the escaped blood. As a spray, this blend keeps you from having to disturb the tender skin, which may cause more pain or injury.

Boo Boo Bang Spray

  • 2 oz. glass amber bottle (See websites below)
  • 30 drops geranium
  • 15 drops lavender
  • 10 drops cypress
  • 5 drops helichrysum*
  • 5 drops frankincense*
  • 2 tsp. grain alcohol (you could leave this out if the skin is broken or scraped)
  • purified water (fill the rest of the way)

A cold compress 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off immediately following the injury can be helpful. Always protect the skin with a clean cloth before applying ice. I also use Homeopathic Arnica orally after any type of injury that involves swelling or bruising.

* Both frankincense and helichrysum are two of the more expensive oils. If you don’t have these on hand right away, don’t worry—the other oils in this recipe are very helpful all on their own. However, as time and finances permit, I highly recommend having both of these oils in your stash, as they are both helpful for a number of situations.

Again, severe bruising or swelling after a blow or fall may indicate a broken bone or a more serious condition. Use wisdom and seek professional medical care when needed.

If you want to start using essential oils to care for your own family, I would recommend buying them wholesale. Why pay retail when you don’t have to? It’s kind of like being a Costco member, but without the yearly fee. In fact, there isn’t a fee to becoming a wholesale customer at all. The only requirement is the purchase of a starter kit.
