One of the things I love about using Young Living’s Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils is that I trust their purity so much I’ll even use them in recipes we can “eat.”

breathspray3

My girls and I had fun this morning whipping up a batch of Sweet Breath Sprays for gift giving! Aren’t these bottles adorable???

breath_spray

The recipe can be modified, but if you’re using tiny bottles like mine (.05 ml), I recommend mixing up a larger batch and keeping it in a separate bottle as a “refill” stash. I use the tiny bottles because I don’t like extra weight in my purse, and they’re light enough for my husband to keep in his pocket.

The following recipe makes almost 2 oz. You can use pipettes or an eye dropper to refill your breath spray bottles. Or you can simply use 2 oz. bottles to begin with.

1/4 oz. Vodka (keep in mind, there is more alcohol in your bottle of vanilla than in this recipe)
1 1/2 oz. Purified Water
10 drops YLTG Peppermint Essential Oil*
3 drops YLTG Thieves Essential Oil Blend*
2 drop YLTG Lemon Essential Oil
1-2 drops Stevia or 1 tsp. honey
2 oz. glass spray bottle

Blend together and store in a 2 oz. dark glass spray bottle (available HERE). Spray 1-2 squirts in your mouth for refreshing, clean scented breath!

*I only recommend using Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) Essential Oils in this recipe, since they are pure enough to be ingested, and since lower quality oils may be toxic.

You may have seen the passive aggressive “open letter” one mom apparently wrote publicly to her friend, detailing her frustration with her friend’s involvement in an unnamed network marketing company.

Specifically, the writer claims that her friend’s association with this company has compromised their relationship. She describes a friend who isn’t so friendly—who often puts undue pressures on her to attend sales parties, calls or texts her only to sell her something, and who gives her the third degree if she declines.

We don’t know if this friend actually exists or not, but if she does, I have to wonder why the writer didn’t simply tell her friend in private, “I’m really not interested.” Most people I know would be cool with that. But I think some people have a hard time saying “no,” and then blame their unwillingness to be frank on other people.

In fact, I suspect this particular “open letter” has less to do with network marketing and more to do with a woman who needs to learn to exercise assertive languagdreamstime_xs_35663389 mom baby computere with her friend instead of resorting to broad-brushed, passive aggressive rants online.

The writer says to her friend, “This company is asking you to tap your most significant relationships for money.” Let’s be logical. The underlying message here is that it’s wrong to make money off your friends. Which would be a good message if that is the only motivation for the friendship (that’s called using people) or if the friend is truly being manipulative or pushy—especially after being told no. It happens with any business.

But, I find it ironic that the open letter itself is hosted on a mommy blog that earns advertising dollars when it gets website hits from other moms—moms who read and share articles such as her “open letter.”

I get emails, posts in my Facebook feed, and invitations all the time from friends who are selling things. Usually, I’ll cheer them on! But, here’s a hint: If it gets particularly irritating, there is a handy little “unfollow” button that can quickly solve the problem.

Honestly, I’m more irritated with invitations to play Candy Crush than I am the efforts of homeschool moms attempting to supplement their families’ income.

Social media is a community of friends, but it’s also a community of village shops and services. I’d much prefer to spend my money at the “shops” of my friends and family than on the website of some faceless company.

If we’re walkinmomsvingsaladlargeg through our own little village, we’re not going to roll our eyes when we pass the local baker passing out samples of his hot baked bread. “There’s my friend again trying to sell me one those donuts. Why can’t he stay inside his shop, so that I don’t have to say ‘no thank you’ when I pass by? It’s so awkward.” Get over your fear of saying “no thank you” or walk on the other side of the street, but don’t talk about him behind his back.

Better yet, cheer on your friends! I love it when I see a friend’s daughter peddling her handmade jewelry, knitting, crafts, baked goods, or other wares in an effort to establish a home-based business she can take into marriage. Good for her!

There is nothing wrong and everything right with a wife who sells her goods on Etsy or establishes a network marketing business in an effort to help supplement her husband’s income, without leaving her home and children.

But, personally, I prefer network marketing because I hate to sell things. I don’t mind marketing something – in fact, that can be fun. I love teaching the benefits of something that helps people. And I love sharing information about things I love.

I do it all the time. You probably do too. We share recipes, favorite restaurants, healthy food info, mothering tips, good online deals etc. Some of my friends probably remember the quinoa kick I went on when I first discovered this amazing super food! I don’t make money from any of these things; I just like talking about what works for me.

And this is the way I shared long before I had a business. I viewed it as an extension of my ministry to wives and mothers. So network marketing just came naturally.

In fact, it kind of happened by accident for me. I loved essential oils, I loved making home made products with them; and when I saw a friend who had a need, I loved being able to bring over samples of something that might work for them.

Then, if they wanted to know where they could get more, I simply referred them to the company. But I can honestly say I’ve never felt the need to pressure any of my friends to “buy” anything. Ever. And I’ve never pressured anyone to attend any of my events. Ever.

Which is why I think the Accidental Paycheck is so cool. Sometimes you can earn an “accidental” income during the simple process of helping people. My network marketing business is more like a glorified “referral program.” Which is the way I like it. Again, I detest “sales.”Home Party dreamstime_xs_5548977

Yes, as my business has grown it has become less accidental and more deliberate. Since my husband got involved, and my business became our “family business,” it is more organized and planned. This has made it grow exponentially. But I’ve always been very careful to incorporate the following guidelines in our home business:

  • Share openly with friends and family in need without any sort of expectation in return. (This is honestly the part of my business that is the most fun and satisfying!)
  • Invite people to events, but never question them if they decline. Usually, I simply post an open invitation on Facebook. I don’t normally personally invite a friend unless they’ve already expressed a past interest. If they want to come, they’ll let me know.
  • Make sure to provide some sort of value or benefit to the people attending the event. This could be education, a DIY project, or fun games and gifts.
  • Never resort to “selling” a product. Again, I am not interested in a retail business. I don’t have time for it and I hate sales. Did I mention I hate sales?
  • I get to do the fun part: Talk and teach about products I love; and share with others how they’ve impacted my life. Then, if they express an interest, I direct them to my company with my referral number. No sales. No shipping. No quotas. No bookkeeping. NO pressure!

So, if your friend is truly operating her network marketing business by using people, hounding them, or manipulating her family and friends, then she is doing it wrong. Not only does this type of thing give everyone else in the business a bad name, i??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????t also means her business is destined to fail.

But, if you are secretly harboring angst against your friend for simply being excited about her home business and talking about it, maybe you need to learn to do what good friends do. Graciously and assertively communicate directly to her. Talk about it.

But first, consider whether or not you are being presumptive or judgmental. Make sure you’re not assuming false motives or operating under a false perception of network marketing.

If you’ve never told your friend you’re not interested in her parties, is it really fair to her that you get secretly irritated when she invites you again? If you’ve never unfollowed her posts, is it really her responsibility to make sure they don’t show up in your newsfeed?

Nobody can read minds. Open and assertive communication keeps things “clean” between friends. Passive aggressive jabs are dishonest, and they foster distrust and hurt. This sort of thing is a lot more unkind than inviting someone to a Tupperware party.

Whoever this woman is, I have to wonder if her very public and humiliating “open letter” made the friendship with her friend any stronger. I kind of doubt it. In fact, I bet a few tears were shed.

At least she won’t have to be irritated by some cheerful party invitation in her inbox again. Ever.

pooljump 2One of the great things about our Young Living business is the fact that we can now afford to do a few things we used to only dream of doing. Last summer, our family headed south to Branson, Missouri for a much-needed family retreat at a beautiful, secluded vacation home that included a private, salt water pool overlooking Table Rock Lake!

We ate organically in our own fully-equipped kitchen, spent uninterrupted time together, unplugged from technology, and lazed the day away beside the pool. But the tender, white skin my children inherited from my Scottish-descended husband wasn’t used to all that sunshine!

BransonKidsThankfully, I brought along the lavender-based skin soothing spray I had made the week before. This stuff is not only completely plant-based, it does a great job soothing and refreshing tender skin. And did I mention is smells amazing?

My only problem was that I hadn’t made enough for my crew! Thankfully, I jumped on Facebook and was able to locate a Young Living distributor in the area who was willing to sell me her extra bottle of Young Living Lavender Essential Oil. So I quickly whipped up another batch and saved the day!

Although I usually apply tbransonmomdadtherapeutic grade lavender essential oil “neat” (undiluted) to smaller areas of skin, when my kids have been in the sun all day, they need something that will gently mist larger areas, like shoulders and backs.

I simply mixed together 25 drops of Young Living lavender Essential Oil* with 2 oz. of pure Aloe Vera Juice in a glass spray bottle.

Though not necessary, refrigerating it makes it nice and cool on the skin!

Fun & Sun Skin Calming Spray

20-25 drops Young Living Therapeutic Grade Lavender Essential Oil

2 oz. of 100% Pure Aloe Vera Juice (Water or Rose Water could be substituted)

2 oz. Dark glass spray bottle (don’t use plastic)

CAUTION: I only recommend Young Living Therapeutic Grade Lavender Oil in this recipe, since many brands are distilled using toxic chemicals, or include synthetic additives that could burn sensitive skin. The same warning is true for Aloe Vera Juice. Check the ingredient label, since many Aloe Vera brands contain numerous other ingredients.

When our family began to purge our home of toxic chemicals, one thing I dearly missed using was my perfume collection! My husband used to travel around the world on business. And, when he did, he would bring home all sorts of exotic perfumes for me, encased in ornate bottles that I would display upon a mirrored tray in our bedroom. I still have many of them displayed; though, now,  mostly for decoration.

The more I learned about the way our skin absorbs so much of what we put on it, getting into the blood stream and wreaking havoc upon our health and hormones, the more I desired to find an alternative. With that in mind, instead of using perfumes that contained harmful chemical extenders and synthetic scents, I wanted to make my own perfumes using therapeutic grade essential oils.

At first, most of my perfuming attempts all seemed to smell the same – probably because I always chose my same favorite oils. However, I finally found a recipe I loved!

Actually, my daughter is the one who found it. She discovered a recipe online, tweaked it a bit, and made it as a cologne for my husband for Father’s Day. But I loved it so much, I started wearing it too! At first, my husband complained, but when I explained to him that it smelled different on each of us because of our different body chemistries, he warmed up to the idea. Now, instead of our colognes clashing, they blend together nicely. Just like us.

Try adding more sweet almond oil to use this dreamy scent as a massage oil. Also, I add a drop of myrrh or frankincense to extend the scent and to deepen and “fix” the cologne. Feel free to experiment!

Scent-sual Secrets

30 drops cedarwood
20 drops clary sage
10 drops ylang ylang
6 drops patchouli
1 drop myrrh or frankincense
2 oz. – sweet almond or jojoba oil (optional)

Store in a dark glass bottle in a dark place for two weeks to blend and intensify the scent. A roll on bottle works well for this perfume, but if you want to make it into a spray, use vodka and water, instead of the carrier oil.

REMEMBER: The perfume you wear actually enters your body’s system, so I only recommend health-promoting Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. Many lower quality oils can actually be toxic. See:  Safe or Toxic? How Much Do You Know about Essential Oils?

As leaders in Young Living, James and I strive to operate our business, as well as our household, from a thoroughly Christian worldview. Because people know that about us, we have frequently been asked about our thoughts on how we as Christians should or shouldn’t interact with secular companies as employees, as customers or, in our case, as network marketing professionals.

A Christian Work Ethic

There are a lot of different situations in the work place that call for varying responses from Christians. I’ve often wondered about the moral dilemma a Believer might face while working in a grocery or drugstore that sells pornographic magazines, or, worse, the abortion pill. How do they handle that?

womanreadingdreamstime_xs_1745792Perhaps they request not to actually participate in those sorts of transactions; but, regardless, I’m pretty sure there are plenty of Christians who continue to work for such companies. The fact is, Christians work for and engage in business with non-Christians all the time. This has been true throughout the ages.  Imagine the sorts of frustrations Joseph must have faced as he faithfully served the Pharaoh. Yet, God blessed him and used his efforts to save Jacob, his family, and all of Egypt.

Unless you live in an Amish community, most of us also work for and engage in daily business with unbelievers, as well as brothers and sisters who have drastic theological differences.

We homeschool our children, and we discovered long ago the benefits of networking with other homeschoolers. But that also meant working with families whose beliefs were sometimes drastically different than ours. Put Presbyterians, Baptists, Messianic Jews, Roman Catholics, and Mennonites all in the same room and you have the potential for all sorts of fireworks!

James and I market essential oils for a secular company that produces the purest and most therapeutically effective essential oils on the planet. They also sometimes word their materials in ways with which we, as Christians, don’t agree, or in ways that may make us uncomfortable.

To begin with, Young Living does not claim to be a “Christian company” (if there actually is such a thing). However, in almost every area, it is run in a way that is consistent with, and very friendly to, Christian family values. We have witnessed the integrity and ethical attitude of the corporate leadership, as well as in many of Young Living’s successful independent distributors. You see, while Young Living is technically a secular company, there are many, many Christians who are involved in it – and it shows.

????????????????????????????????????????One of the beauties of network marketing, specifically with Young Living, is that we are free to run and promote our organizations with our own priorities and flavor. While that means a lot of religious diversity, it also means religious freedom.

In our case, because James and I are Christians, we, like so many of you, operate our organization from a distinctly Christian worldview, hoping to give God all the glory for the amazing oils we promote. Because of this, we tend to attract members with similar desires and values. This helps our teams to work together in a fairly like-minded setting.

Freedom of Religious Expression

Because of Young Living’s business model, we, as the Common Scents Team, have the freedom to offer our members distinctly Christian literature, videos, Facebook discussion groups, seminars, or whatever else we choose to provide – allowing Young Living to supply the products and resources we need or that we choose to promote.

Some network marketing companies forbid any mention of God or religion at all. I am thankful for the freedom Young Living gives us to express our Christianity as we wish. My husband has been asked on multiple occasions to pray before meals at various Young Living events. And we’ve had the opportunity to openly share our faith.

However, we sometimes receive questions and concerns over some of the New Age sounding verbiage that is occasionally found in the marketing materials, and even, at times, direct quotes from certain leaders in Young Living.

One thing to remember is that Gary Young is the CEO of an amazing company, but he is not your pastor. So, there is no need to go to him for pastoral advice or to be shocked if his theological opinions do not perfectly line up with yours. He is a kind and brilliant man, and an expert in his field, but that field happens to grow lavender, not hermeneutics. You wouldn’t go to your pastor to learn about distillation or the mysteries of terpenes or phenols, so let’s be consistent.

Gary OcoteaCommitment to Purity

There are other essential oil companies out there, but there aren’t any that come close to the purity, quality, and expertise of Young Living’s Seed to Seal process.

Before using an essential oil on my children, I need to know and trust where it came from. And Young Living’s oils are the only ones I trust. I’ve been to Young Living’s farms, I’ve watched the distillation process in person, I’ve seen Gary Young’s obsession with purity and efficacy. It’s real.2015-04-12 12.48.09

Another thing to keep in mind is that we all market products every single day. James often “markets” products for Apple Computer (for free) when he tells people how much he loves his Mac. That doesn’t mean he supports the charities or the initiatives of the CEO of Apple, a man who last year gave over $100 million to left-wing causes.

Marketing All the Day

I love Whole Foods, Restoration Hardware, Trader Joe’s, Soft Surroundings, and even Costco, and I tell people about it all the time on Facebook by posting about the good service I received, or a new product I’m excited about!

I have no clue as to the theological beliefs of the CEO’s of any of these companies. And, it’s probably pretty likely we wouldn’t be in agreement with their religious beliefs. But I bet they employ hundreds, if not thousands of Christians.

Home Party dreamstime_xs_5548977Yes, we would prefer it if Young Living’s literature stuck exclusively to the science of the oils, and if they didn’t sometimes get caught up in the popular verbiage of the mainstream natural health culture (which is highly influenced by the New Age), but given today’s regulatory environment, it is very, very difficult.

Still, personally, I believe it is our call as Christians to take dominion in this area—to be a natural, positive, organic influence. Not naggy nay-sayers.

I believe that we can and should be that influence through Young Living. Why shouldn’t God’s people have access to the best? And, yes, they truly are the very best.

And here’s another point. Last year, at the Master Leader Retreat in Ecuador, Mary Young alluded to a quote often made by her husband, Gary, regarding Young Living’s compensation plan. She said,

“Money in the hands of good people does really great things. For too long, money has been seen as an evil. And, when that’s the case—when only “bad” people have money, it leaves the generous and the benevolent, or those who would be, without the ability to change the world. Money in the hands of world changers actually changes things.” – Mary Young

Equipping and Empowering Christian Families

2014Convention_CST_TeamPhotoFor us, the network marketing opportunity has allowed us to equip and empower everyday Christian families with the ability to get out of debt, to stay home together to work as a family, to support the needs of others, to experience a healthier lifestyle, and to be free from the rat race that enslaves so many. We’ve also been able to donate to various causes and help people in need that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

Our organization has thousands of members and, we’re gaining anywhere from 800-1500 new members every month! It is our prayer that the Common Scents team will be an influential force, and an effective tool that God uses to draw many precious lives into His Kingdom. I believe He can do that through our witness within Young Living and without.

And I believe this is a far more powerful and productive approach to this subject than agonizing over a few paragraphs of silly verbiage in a catalog. So, the answer is yes. I do believe that Christians, of all people, should market Young Living Essential Oils. Let’s work together to make a difference!

Just in case you wondered, you are not God. If you don’t believe me, ask your husband. Neither are there little pieces of God scattered throughout the universe.

Splendor. Beauty. Expanse.  As amazing as that rock formation is, God created it; He doesn’t reside in it.

Magical. Breathtaking. Spectacular. As rightly awed as you may be by the beauty of the night sky, remember, God spoke the stars and planets into existence; and when He did so, He didn’t leave a part of Himself behind. God isn’t there. Though, if you watch carefully, you may find His glory being proclaimed (Psalm 19:1).

Powerful. Amazing. Soothing. Yes. But, regardless of what the latest health guru tells you, the God of the Universe does not mystically linger in your little bottle of essential oil or supplement. I don’t care what the catchy name on the label says.

New AgecroppedGod spoke herbs and essential oils into existence at Creation when He formed the plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs and gave them to man (Genesis 1:29), but they are gifts given for our service (Psalm 104:14; Ezekiel 47:12). Good gifts. Just, don’t look for God there. Instead, open your Bible.

And know your heresies.

Pantheism: “God is everything”

Panentheism: “God is in everything”

You alone are the Lord; You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and everything on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve them all… (Nehemiah 9:6)

Christians have inadvertently relinquished their rights to God’s good gift of natural health, a gift that encourages the body to do what God designed it to do, which is to use the immune system to heal itself. You see, the immune system is a tool given to us by God, and the plants God gave us at Creation are designed to complement and nurture it.

The vitamins and minerals, enzymes, amino acids, proteins, essential oils, and millions of other intricate necessities infused into the plants and trees are not there by accident! They were weaved into Creation by a loving Father for the purpose of serving His children.

“Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.” Ezekiel 47:12

Remember, all of these things work together to provide nourishment to our bodies, which keep all of our body systems, including our immune system, running like well-oiled machines.

Many false religions embrace the gift, but reject the Gift-Giver. Or, they try to turn the gift into the Gift-Giver. Christians, on the other hand, rightly embrace the Gift-Giver; but, ironically, they too often devalue His gifts by placing them below man’s wisdom in worth and authority. In other words, they pridefully snub the Gift-Giver’s gifts. Both are wrong.

Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:5)

Arrogant. Futile. Anemic. The gift of natural foods and remedies was given to us by God for an ultimate purpose, therefore they are good and useful, and will serve us well when used properly and with thanksgiving. But, if we don’t reclaim this territory for Jesus—if we continue to eat empty, toxic foods and blindly trust in physicians to be our “miracle makers,” we will become weaker and sicker and find ourselves utterly unable to fulfill our calling.

Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians. So Asa rested with his fathers; he died in the forty-first year of his reign. (2 Chronicles 16:12–13)

Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress.” (Judges 10:14)

We must remember that all healing comes from the Great Physician, so that is where we should turn. This is one reason that, when we apply our essential oils, we pray and ask God to answer our supplications (James 5:14). Faith, obedience, and prayer are crucial.

Since we’re to obey God and not trust in our own understanding, if He wants us to anoint ourselves with oils while we pray, or if He wants us to dip ourselves in the Jordan seven times (2 Kings 5:10; John 9:6,7), we must believe and obey!

Anointing the sick and downcast with oil is found throughout Scripture. Unfortunately, it is the tendency of our sinful and idolatrous hearts to put our trust in anything but God. We often trust in the Internet, in doctors, in pharmaceutical companies, in immunizations, in chemo, and even in created things—gifts intended for our good, but used in a sinful way. Some of us even put our trust in essential oils! It’s is all idolatry!

So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees. (Jeremiah 3:9)

James wrote in his epistle that if someone has a need, we should call the elders of the church to anoint them with oil and pray! Scripture is clear that God hears and answers simple prayers of faith!

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up…” James 5:14-15
High resolution conceptual water or dew drop falling from a green fresh leaf on a blue clear water making waves

God is the ultimate Provider. In Genesis 22:14, He is called Jehovah Jireh, which is Hebrew for “the Lord will provide.” He is also called Jehovah Rapha, which means God is our healer. When we sing the doxology, we “praise God from whom all blessings flow.” In James 1:17 we’re reminded that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.”

We need to stop living like we believe that New Agers, Eastern Mystics, and other false religions “own” the Creator’s gifts. Praise God for what He has given us; live like you believe in God’s graciousness; study and learn how to make His gifts useful for yourself and your family; and glorify Him by using them with thanksgiving, in an effort to strengthen and edify His people, and to further the Gospel.

If Christians would do this, the world would stop associating God’s natural gifts with mysticism, and they would begin to see the power, provision, and graciousness of a loving and creative God.

Two weeks ago, James and I arrived home safely from our all-expense paid trip to Croatia and Paris. Our two-week excursion was preceded by business-building efforts with our team in Glasgow, Scotland where Shael and James Haram are doing a fantastic job sharing God’s gift of oils in the UK!

Then, we headed to Split, Croatia (again, a little early, for some extra R&R), and stayed at the Radisson Resort with a balcony overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

Over the next few days, we took a ferry and toured the island of Brach; sampled numerous gourmet, fresh seafood dishes; and explored the 2000-year-old ruins of a medieval fortress with the most as.2015-04-09 16.30.39

We also visited Diocletian’s palace, and walked along the coast enjoying the breeze, beauty, and aromatic scents of the ancient city.

After the rest of the Young Living Diamonds arrived, we moved to the 5-star hotel, Le Meridien Lay Split, also overlooking the exotic Adriatic Sea.

Over the next few days, we explored together the island of Hvar; enjoyed a beautiful organic meal on the countryside; and experienced a ribbon cutting ceremony (after helping to plant helichrysum on Young Living’s newest farm in Croatia).

Young Living gifted us with stylish jackets, nice button down shirts, and a big bag of free oils and NingXia Red (why did I pack mine again?).

Young Living then chartered a jet for all the diamonds to travel to Paris, France (Yes, we almost died in a plane crash, but I digress) where we stayed at the exquisite L’Hotel du Collectionneur Arc de Triomphe Paris.

Young Living gifted us with passes to tour the historic city’s most popular sights, but we opted to do most of the site seeing on our own.

The grand finale included an exclusive Diamond dinner at the French baroque style castle, Château de Vaux le Vicomte. After dinner, we were invited to the veranda to enjoy our own personal fireworks display over the beautiful gardens.

There’s no way I can describe to you all the blessings of this trip, but feel free to (if you haven’t already) browse our Facebook photos and catch a glimpse of the beauty of Europe.

A few years ago, I would never have dreamed we would be experiencing such a wonderful opportunity. Achieving Diamond last fall was stunning, but the beauty of it all is that any of you can accomplish the same thing. And we would be honored and eager to join you in your efforts to get there! Just let us know!

So thankful to the Lord for Young Living’s generosity and quality commitment to their customers, their staff, and their leaders!

2014 was a great year for the Common Scents Team! Not only did James and I achieve the rank of Young Living Diamond, so did Kim and Ryan Prather, one of our leader families (a month before we did!)! We also had many ranking up to Platinum, Gold, and Silver, with more families not far behind! It’s been exciting to see so many Christian families catching the vision of a healthier lifestyle!

But, one ofFamilyBusiness the things I love about our Young Living business is the way that, in addition to helping families take control of their own health, we’re also helping equip families to become financially free. In today’s economy, there are Christian families who are struggling, especially those who are convicted that Mom should be home raising the little ones, rather than pursuing a career outside the home.

Today, I want to introduce you to my friend, Katrina Stidd, a Young Living Gold who joined our team during a financial crisis in her family, hoping only to earn enough money to pay for her essential oils.

stidd4Now, just three years later, Katrina and her husband, Derin, are enjoying an income they never dreamed possible; and they’re doing it from home, together! What a wonderful New Year’s gift! Now, instead of leaving his family each day to work a dead end job that was earning only a fraction of their Young Living check, Derin Stidd is home permanently, pursuing ministry, and working together with Katrina and their children to multiply their business growing efforts.

Enjoy their story…

Stacy blog When you started with Young Living did you believe this would ever be possible?

stiddkatrina No! But we are SO excited!! You know, when we began our Young Living business, I was absolutely convinced it wouldn’t ever be “anything.” I just wanted to cover the cost of my oils. We needed the additional income, but I truly did not believe it would happen. Yet, here we are, two years later, living a dream!

Stacy blog So tell me exactly how you got started with Young Living? What’s your story?

stiddkatrinaOur story is a little painful. We joined Young Living three years ago. In the beginning, our financial situation was so bleak that we didn’t have one spare penny to build our oil stash or replace what we were using. We were careful to ration the few oils we had; so, the thought of a $50 monthly investment on Essential Rewards was an impossibility to me.

To say we were living paycheck to paycheck would be an understatement… it was far more serious. Between my husband’s two retail jobs and his part time position as pastor/church planter, we were thankful for the days when we had food on the table…because sometimes we had none. In addition to juggling disconnect notices, we often scraped for change to buy what we needed for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for our family of six.

We would have been homeless several times, had it not been for family help. Two years ago, on October 2, I was sharing with my sister my exhaustion over our financial situation. She mentioned that she could help me use my Young Living membership to earn referral bonuses to pay for my oils, and then potentially earn a part time income, as well. She told me she was making a few hundred dollars each month, and I was astonished. That would change our whole world (by the way, this same sister later went on to achieve the rank of Diamond!).

My husband was extremely hesitant. We had already attempted several other home businesses and this appeared to be no different. Still, I was convinced we had no choice. So, with my husband’s blessing, on November 2, 2012, the same month baby number five was born, we jumped in with our first Essential Rewards order.

I started sharing on Facebook all the ways we were using our oils. I made a list of friends who I thought might be interested and started contacting them. And, much to my amazement, people were interested! In fact, many friends signed right up!Woman And Young Girl In Kitchen With Laptop And Paperwork Smilin

Soon, we were covering our monthly order! And, three months later, my business began to explode! The next month, during a budget crisis conversation with my husband, I informed him that I would be able to cover the car payment. He was stunned. From that point forward, my Young Living check continued to rapidly grow, and became a significant portion of our income.

With each bAutumn Girl enjoying nature on the field. Beauty Girl Outdoors renchmark, from covering the cost of our own oils to paying major bills, we grew more hopeful. But, we didn’t truly begin to realize the amazing potential of this business, until we hit the rank of Silver.

That’s when we began to really dream…dream of buying groceries as needed, paying our utility bills with ease, paying off our mountain of student loan debt, and taking vacations we’d never been able to afford. But the biggest dream is one that just become a reality. The dream of bringing my husband home from the world of retail, so that he could pursue full time ministry without also bearing the burden of family finances.

Just two years after we started this journey, my husband has ended his employment, and we are looking at a completely open plate. When people want to determine what someone’s true goals are in life, they may ask the question: “If money were not an issue, what would you do?”

We find ourselves facing the reality of that question. It’s beyond exciting, intimidating, exhilarating, challenging, and truly beyond any scenario we ever dreamed.

Stacy blog Do you think your story is unusual? Is this type of success really possible for most people or did you just luck out?

stiddkatrinaI am meeting more and more people who have found financial relief, freedom, and the ability to dream as a result of their Young Living business, so I must truly answer that I do not believe our story is unusual in the context of Young Living. In the world otherwise, among our friends and family who still think we’re crazy, it is incredibly unusual. The average person does not build a residual income.

However, within Young Living, this level of achievement is absolutely possible for anyone who is determined enough to never stop until they arrive. And I’d like to make it clear that we achieved this without giving up our family’s priorities. We probably could have built faster if we had made other decisions with our time along the way. However, during the last two years, we moved twice (including a difficult transition lasting multiple months), I delivered baby #5, and I homeschooled our oldest three children. So, these results were achieved at a healthy pace, all while ensuring that our priorities were in check.

I’m still in utter astonishment each month when we receive our check, which is now more than my husband and I have ever made collectively during any single month in our almost 12 years of marriage. We give God all the glory, and we’re beyond thankful for every blessing – even the simple blessing of buying groceries as needed and paying utility bills before they are late. We thank God continuously for His abundant provision, and we’re excited to see what the next few years hold. After all, we are looking at literally a whole world of possibilities!

Stacy blogThank you, Katrina, for sharing your amazing story with our readers! It was truly inspiring! May God continue to use Young Living to bless Christian families with the ability to improve their health and become financially free! And may He help us to remember our duty to use it to His glory!

Katrina and her husband, Derin, live together with their five children in Indiana and look forward with hope and excitement to what God has prepared for them in 2015! You can visit Katrina on Facebook at Scents, Sense, and Cents.

The reformulated ART Skin Care System is finally here!

The closer I get to 50, the more I wish I would have paid more attention to how I treated my skin when I was younger! That being said, since I started using Young Living’s essential oil-infused beauty products I feel like I’ve been making up for lost time…literally! My skin has never felt more nourished and bright!

ART facial care productsI love that I don’t have to feel guilty about what I’m putting on my face, and it smells amazing – I can’t wait to cleanse my face in the evening!

Meeting advanced skin care technology with nourishing botanicals and pure essential oils, this effective, simple, three-step system is perfect for all ages!

Much like an artist prepares a canvas, Young Living’s ART Skin Care System uses skin-loving oils and natural ingredients to have you feeling refreshed, renewed, and absolutely radiant. That is the beauty of ART.

ART GENTLE CLEANSER uses a mild foaming action to lift and capture impurities without irritating the skin or stripping its natural oils.

ART LIGHT MOISTURIZER works with your skin to help retain and maintain proper hydration. The proprietary blend of essential oils and natural ingredients will leave your face feeling soft and supple.

ART REFRESHING TONER removes any residual impurities without drying out the skin. With a perfect blend of essential oils, our toner will help balance your skin’s natural pH.

For those over thirty, I also recommend my own regiment of Wolfberry Eye Cream and Boswellia™ Wrinkle Cream for extra moisture.

Boswellia™ Wrinkle Cream nourishes skin for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Its primary ingredient methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) supports collagen to improve skin firmness and minimize fine lines. Essential oils geranium, myrrh, sandalwood, and ylang ylang soothe and soften the skin, while frankincense and wolfberry oil enhance collagen formation.

Wolfberry Eye Cream™ may be applied morning and evening to ease the appearance of puffiness and dark circles around the eyes, and to promote skin tightening. Wolfberry Eye Cream is formulated from oil that is carefully extracted from the seeds of the Ningxia wolfberry. Rich in vitamin E and linoleic acids, wolfberry oil has unusual chemistry that makes it ideal for nourishing and hydrating skin. It is highly regarded by Asian women for its regenerative properties and its ability to protect aging skin and add luster to skin tone.
