Here’s a shocker for you… I used to be a smoker.
I liked the smell of smoke the way I liked the smell of a campfire. But I hated the after-smell. So I didn’t smoke in the house, and I washed my hands and brushed my teeth a LOT.
Still—like most love-hate relationships—I craved it. This thing I didn’t even want.
And as the foolishness of my younger years began to fade, I grew more concerned about the health implications—especially with my already compromised lung capacity due to severe scoliosis.
Though I had short bouts where I would quit, I was 27 before I finally kicked the habit for good. I tried many times… but it took a lot of prayer and a long time before it finally stuck.
Interestingly, I also quit biting my nails at the same time. I had done that since I was a toddler, so I’ve often wondered if there was some kind of brain link between the two.
I sure wish I had essential oils back then—and knew what I know now.
Black pepper contains a compound called piperine, which contributes to its strong aroma and stimulating properties. When you inhale black pepper essential oil, it interacts with your olfactory system—the part of your brain responsible for processing smell.
And here’s the interesting part…
That system is closely tied to areas involved in reward, cravings, and habit-related behaviors—including those influenced by substances like nicotine and sugar.
Some studies suggest that the sharp, spicy scent of black pepper may help reduce cravings in the moment by stimulating sensory receptors and shifting how the brain perceives the urge.
It can also increase alertness and give your brain something strong to focus on—almost like interrupting the craving loop.
It’s not a cure for addiction, but it can be a simple tool to help you pause, reset, and regain control in those moments when cravings hit.
Even if you’re not a smoker—but there are other cravings you’d love to get a handle on (hello, sugar)—this is worth trying.
Sometimes it’s not just about willpower… it’s about giving your brain a different signal in the moment. A simple shift can make a big difference.
And honestly? Even if you’re not dealing with cravings…One of my favorite diffuser blends has black pepper in it—and it smells amazing.
Cozy Diffuser Blend:
- 3 drops Bergamot
- 3 drops Black Pepper
- 3 drops Ylang Ylang
It’s warm, grounding, slightly spicy… and just feels good.
