Cutting Board Conditioner

Orange Basil Wood Conditioner

My Grandma Betty always stressed the importance of oiling wooden kitchen tools—cutting boards, salad bowls, and even wooden spoons! I didn’t think it was a big deal until one of my favorite salad bowls dried out and split. I should have known Grandma Betty knew what she was talking about!

This wood conditioner isn’t just for cutting boards—it works wonders on all your wooden kitchen tools. Regular conditioning extends their lifespan, maintains their appearance, and helps prevent bacteria buildup.

The best part? It’s easy and inexpensive to make! Plus, the refreshing citrusy-herbal scent is a delightful bonus. Store it in a cute wood jar like the one HERE. They make fantastic gifts too!

Why Condition Your Cutting Board?

  1. Prevents Drying and Cracking
Wood and bamboo cutting boards naturally absorb moisture, which can lead to drying, warping, and cracking over time. Conditioning keeps the board hydrated and protected.

  2. Protects Against Bacteria and Stains
A properly conditioned board – especially with the addition of essential oils – creates a barrier against moisture and reduces the risk of bacteria growth. It also helps prevent deep stains from food like beets, tomatoes, and turmeric.

  3. Enhances Durability
Regular maintenance strengthens the fibers of the wood, making the board more resilient to knife marks and daily wear and tear. This means fewer grooves where bacteria can hide and a longer-lasting cutting board.

How to Condition Your Cutting Board

  1. Clean It First – Grandma Betty never used soap on her wood – just hot water and dish brush. But I don’t go quite that far – I use hot water, all-natural Thieves Dish Soap and a sturdy brush. It’s very important to make sure your board is dried thoroughly before conditioning.
  2. Apply Conditioner – I like to apply the conditioner with a handy wax applicator, but you could use a clean cloth.
  3. Let It Absorb  – Allow to soak in for several hours or overnight
  4. Buff and Store – Wipe off any excess oil and store your board in a dry place.

By conditioning your cutting board regularly, you’ll keep it looking beautiful and functioning effectively for years to come!
