Q: What are essential oils?

A: Essential oils are liquid, volatile, organic compounds that come from the flowers, shrubs, trees, roots, and bushes that God gave us at Creation. These are aromatic oils which have been carefully extracted through steam distillation or cold expression; and, are highly concentrated. The fact that they are volatile means that they pass off readily into a vapor – that’s what makes them aromatic. Read more HERE.

Q: How do you use them?

A: There are many different aromatherapy models for using essential oils. The one that Young Living and our family personally adhere to is the French model. This includes inhalation, topical use, and oral consumption.Lilyana

  • Inhalation – Inhale straight from the bottle, rub a drop between your hands and breathe in deeply, mix with water and spray into the air, or better yet, use a cold air diffuser (a good one comes with your starter kit).
  • Topical – Apply essential oils directly to your skin. Certain (spicy) oils should be diluted with a fatty oil (olive oil, coconut oil etc.). Also, dilution is recommended when using essential oils on children.
  • Internal Use – Young Living Therapeutic Grade essential oils that are labeled as “supplements” are considered GRAS and can be used internally. Certain oils can be placed in an empty gel capsule, dropped directly on the tongue, or added to honey or your favorite beverage. Many people find them great for cooking! Read HERE why it’s important to only use Young Living oils in this way.

Q: Are they safe?

A: While essential oils are safe to use, and a natural part of any plant, they should always be handled with care. They are a concentrated and potent form of the plant’s beneficial properties. You should think of them like any other remedy you might keep in your house. Make sure to store bottles out of the reach of curious children and pets.????????????????????????????????????????

Q: Where should I store my oils?

A: Essential oils should be kept out of direct sunlight as UV rays can damage the chemistry of the oils. This is true for fatty oils in your house too, such as olive oil for cooking. Young Living oils are packaged in amber bottles to help protect them, but be mindful of where you set them in your house. Storing them next to a window, in your car, or on top of the microwave is not recommended, as they will lose some of their potency if they are exposed to extreme temperatures.

Q: Do essential oils expire?

A: With the exception of citrus oils, Young Living’s essential oils do not have expiration dates. They will evaporate over time if the lid is not properly secured, but they will not spoil. However, if you dilute your essential oil with a fatty oil to apply it, any leftover mixture could go rancid over a period of time. It is recommended that you only mix what you need at the time of application.

Q: Why spend more for Young Living oils when I can buy them cheaper somewhere else?

A: Do you realize that if I put ten drops of lavender in a bottle of sweet almond oil most people would smell it and think it was a “pure” bottle of essential oils? They wouldn’t know the difference. That’s what often happens. People believe they’re getting a “great deal” on their $7.00 bottle of lavender; when, in fact, some have discovered that they just spent $7.00 for ten drops of an inferior essential oil.

In addition, it is very likely that even those ten drops have no real value, and may even be adulterated with synthetics! In this case, they are getting ripped off!

Do some research. You will find that most essential oil companies are just brokers. They’re buying their oils from various sources around the world in barrels, and they’re bottling it themselves. Most oils are perfume grade and are cut with other chemicals. It is scary when you consider that people may try to use those oils on their children the same way I’m using my Young Living oils. I have to stress the purity issue out of a concern for your safety!

Most essential oils on the market are not “therapeutic grade,” and most are not 100% pure, regardless of how they are labeled. The problem is that these terms are not regulated by anyone. So, all I can do is tell you what WE mean when we use the term “therapeutic grade,” and then invite you to compare that definition to other companies. See Young Living’s Seed to Seal process HERE.

In fact, as far as I know, Young Living (YL) is the only company that owns their own farms and distilleries; so that right there disqualifies most other companies.

Red Flags

Here are just a few red flags to check for on a bottle of essential oils. If you see these terms, beware. Do yDangerWillRobinsonour research:

  1. DO NOT INGEST – If a bottle of food-based oils (cinnamon, peppermint, oregano etc.) is labeled this way, in my opinion, that is a red flag. YL oils labeled as “supplements” are GRAS (generally regarded as safe) for internal consumption by the the FDA. (Recently, the FDA required Young Living to choose only one method of application per label, so, because of that, you may find some exceptions to this.)
  2. DO NOT APPLY TO SKIN UNDILUTED – Certain “spicy” oils should be diluted, but many YL oils can be applied neat (undiluted). If a mild oil like lavender or frankincense has this type of warning I would beware.
  3. $$$ – Quality essential oils cost money to grow and distill. If a bottle of lavender costs you $5.00, I would bet it is either cut with a carrier oil (which means you’re getting ripped off) or it contains synthetic fragrances or chemicals.
  4. EXPIRATION DATE – Properly stored essential oils (excluding citrus) do not go bad. If an essential oil has an expiration date, it could mean it is cut with a carrier oil (which will eventually go rancid).

I grew up in Southeast Texas where it was too hot to go barefoot – though we did it anyway (just had to avoid the sidewalks).

Frosty lemonade. Hot inner tubes on a cool river. Slides you couldn’t touch until evening (literally). Seat belt burns. Melty popsicles. Fire ants. Sandcastles. All these things were part of summer time. I have my own fond childhood memories of long summer days, but my children are still making theirs. One thing different about my childhood was that, as hot as it was, I’m pretty sure I smelled like jasmine or honeysuckle or something lovely. But my kids stink. Bad!

Cool Down with Essential Oils!

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photography-five-happy-kids-outdoors-image10348482

When I was pregnant and battling morning sickness, I would about pass out when the children came tumbling through the back door looking for something cool to drink.

“No, please! Let me bring the lemonade OUT to YOU! No need to come inside.”

I realize I’m pretty scent sensitive, but wow! There’s nothing like a herd of hot and sweaty kids to make a gal run for her essential oils! Especially when she’s pregnant. Which was always.

So, I thought I’d let you in on my secret weapon…er…remedy. It’s my Stinky Kid Spray. Oh, don’t call it that. Call it something exciting like Superman Spray. Or if you have a lot of girls, call it Princess Mist. They’ll never know.

BLueGlassSprayAromathmsStinky Kid Spray

3 oz. purified water
1 oz. vodka*
vegetable glycerine (1-2 drops)
20 drops peppermint essential oil
4 oz. dark colored glass bottle

*Sometimes people ask if there is something they can use besides alcohol. You could use witch hazel, but I really prefer to use edible products, especially when making something for my children. Besides, there is more alcohol in the vanilla in your cupboard than in this recipe. Plus the alcohol discourages bacterial growth in the water.

You could use lavender, Gentle Baby, Peace & Calming, or your favorite refreshing scent*, but I chose peppermint for its wonderful cooling properties!NingxiaKids

Let me know how it worked! And go make those summer memories!

*Warning: avoid citrus oils when you’re going to be in the sun! And be careful not to get essential oils in the eyes. If this happens, and irritation occurs, flush with milk or cream and all will be well.

Discretion Alert: This article is written for women – specifically for women preparing for marriage. Please enter at your own risk.

I get asked a lot which oils I recommend for the honeymoon. I have a few favorites, but a lot of it will depend on the personal tastes and needs of you and your husband-to-be. You may want to let your fiancé sample some of the oils in your starter kit ahead of time, in order to get an idea of what types of scents are his favorites.

massage oilGet a good start with rich, exotic massage oils and enticing oil blends to stir the emotions, establish good memories, and relax away the stress of the last few weeks (or months) of wedding planning!

Typically, I recommend starting your stash with… you guessed it, a Starter Kit! That way you have a diffuser and plenty of oils to experiment with, along with the ability to order your more deliberate oils and products at the wholesale price. It’s the best all-around deal.

Do not awaken love before its time…

I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
By the gazelles or by the does of the field,
Do not stir up nor awaken love
Until it pleases. (Song of Solomon 2:7)

…but once the time has come, stir things up with essential oils!

The Art of Scents-ual Touch and Massage

The next must-have on your list will be Young Living’s Sensation Massage Oil. Infused with jasmine and rosewood oil, this moisturizing blend is the perfect romantic start to your memorable evening. (Also try Sensation Shower & Bath Gel, as well as a Sensation Body lotion.)

Massage may be a good way to help a shy couple relax as they get to know one another. Light some all-natural candles and have soft music playing in the background (you may want to prepare a music “play list” ahead of time).

footcareCombine the deep, intoxicating effects of essential oils with an evening of loving, sensual touch and gentle massage. And remember, just like anything of value, practice makes perfect. Take the time to study and recognize the desires and prompts of your beloved. Allow yourself to relax—to willingly respond and engage. Explore, feel, taste, smell, listen, watch, communicate, reveal, and enjoy!

Sandalwood, rose, neroli, and ylang ylang, as well as the Young Living blends, Present Time and Sensation, are all excellent choices for massage and sensual exploration. Sandalwood’s mysterious musky aroma blends particularly well with the body’s own natural scent, making it perfect for a romantic evening.

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-image-legs-romantic-couple-lying-bed-home-image15740851Both sandalwood and rose can be used intimately and applied directly to “sensitive” areas. Yes, really. However, because everyone is different, I would suggest having a carrier oil available, just in case you or your husband find any of the oils a little too “stimulating.”

The gentle warmth of Lady Sclereol may help to maintain “moistness,” and it  can even be applied/massaged “directly!” But, while it can be used neat (undiluted), I still suggest diluting it until you figure out your comfort level. Also, a small jar of organic coconut oil is a good idea for the suitcase anyway! Many people find that coconut oil is a good, all-natural lubricant.

The Brain: The Most Important Part of Sexuality

The marriage bed is like a playground; it’s a place to explore and have fun together! But, beyond fun, intimacy (and especially climax) causes the release of oxytocin, an important hormone in the brain—a hormone that is known to promote emotional bonding.

Sexual intimacy promotes bonding. That’s why Scripture warns about some of the dangers of the sin of fornication (1 Corinthians 6:16); but, when used within God’s beautiful design of marriage, sexual intimacy is an awesome thing! It is the glue that binds (Matthew 19:5-6)!

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photos-human-head-hearts-brain-shape-blue-red-image36355378And, because scent effects the limbic system of the brain, the area that controls emotions and stores memories, essential oils can be a powerful and influential tool for enhancing and bonding a relationship.

A bundle of myrrh is my beloved to me, that lies all night between my breasts. (Song of Solomon 1:13)

The brain often associates scents with memories; so, be ready to have flashbacks of your honeymoon every time you smell the oils you experienced together!

Preparing the Bed

Now prepare your sheets and linens by scenting them with something exotic. I suggest making the pillow spray in the recipe section at the bottom of this page using sandalwood, patchouli, ylang ylang, jasmine, or Sensation.

“I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon…” (Proverbs 7:17)

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-romantic-view-aromatherapy-candles-luxurious-evening-image32520830You may not think Proverbs 7:17 is the best promo for an aromatic marriage bed; since, in this case, it references the actions of an adulteress. However, I included it here because it does reveal the ancient custom of scenting the bed chamber as an enticing prelude to intimacy.

And why shouldn’t the marriage bed be the most aromatically rich, exciting, and pleasing bed there is?

I arose to open for my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the handles of the lock. (Song of Solomon 5:5)

Most “sensually inspiring” essential oils work in part by initiating a warm sensation, stimulating the body and arousing passion with their rich, exotic aroma of spicy or floral notes.

Historically, the euphoric properties of essential oils like ylang ylang, myrrh, sandalwood, rose, and patchouli have been used to enhance intimacy. Myrrh is mentioned seven times in the Song of Solomon! Is it any wonder that some believe Myrrh can be helpful for better balance and enhanced intimacy?

“His cheeks are like a bed of spices,
Banks of scented herbs.
His lips are lilies,http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-beautiful-bride-image9062540
Dripping liquid myrrh.” – Song of Solomon 5:13

Avoid synthetically scented candles, lotions, or massage oils. They will clash with your essential oils and many of the chemicals in them are toxic! Consider diffusing Three Wise Men, Sensation, ylang ylang, or jasmine. For the ambiance of candle light, choose either unscented or battery operated candles. String lights are also a good choice.

The Morning After

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photography-romantic-morning-coffee-image25264897You’ll likely have been up late on your wedding night, so the next morning you may be a little groggy. Enjoy a few drops of peppermint and drink a shot of NingXia Red or NingXia Nitro to boost your energy level.

For many couples, the next day is a travel day. An early plane trip or a long drive to your honeymoon destination may require good planning to maximize your energy and help you feel good.

Be sure to pack the NingXia Red products and energizing snacks listed below in the packing checklist!

Another must-have for the new bride is a soothing essential oil-infused perineal spray for the morning after. LavaDerm is an amazing spray that helps soothe stressed skin. ClaraDerm is even better, but it’s quite a bit more expensive. If you use the LavaDerm, I suggest you add 5 drops geranium and 3 drops cypress.

http://www.dreamstime.com/-image10467321I recommend this for the honeymoon, since (and this is a little personal) sometimes young women find they are a little sore the day after the wedding night. Don’t worry! This subsides as your body gets used to intimacy, but in the beginning, the spray can be very soothing. Also, if you’re planning a beach vacation, you’ll love having this in your beach bag!

There are so many new experiences ahead of you! One thing I’d recommend doing is purchasing a copy of When Two Become One by Christopher and Rachel McCluskey. You can either read it ahead or plan to read it aloud together while on your honeymoon!

I’ve compiled a few of my favorite make-ahead recipes below. Feel free to modify them to suit your particular essential oil preferences. And have fun! You are beginning a great journey together! Take the time to relax and enjoy every minute!

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photography-conflicts-family-image23684022

Arguments, frustrations, conflicts, disappointments – these are all part of what we call life. And we rarely enter these negative interactions alone; stress is often a family affair. The old adage is very true, “It takes two to tango;” but, it can also take 3, 4, 10, or more!

And, while we’ve all heard the unhelpful expression, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” research shows that not only can words indeed hurt you, they can kill you.

When faced with extreme stress, our bodies go into “emergency mode,” and we react in a prescribed pattern. This is part of what is known as the fight or flight mechanism. It is a physiological survival response designed to help us cope in times of danger. Whenever there is a perceived threat, your body shifts energy to more martial systems, maximizing your opportunity to get safely through the situation.

The_Fight_or_Flight_Response_smallFirst, the adrenal glands flood your system with adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones make the heart beat faster, raise blood pressure, slow down the digestive process, increase blood flow to the muscles, and boost glucose levels in the bloodstream. Your energy level soars, muscles contract, your jaw becomes rigid, and your respiratory system increases. Often, your senses of vision, hearing, and smell become sharp and focused.

In contrast, your sense of pain may be numbed. This is all part of the body’s programmed response to deal with the perceived and real threats of life, and get you safely through a dangerous time.

But, what occurs when such threats, especially those stemming from arguments and frustrations, occur on a daily basis? And what physiological dangers might come about if the source of such stress comes from within one’s own family?

Stress and Negative Emotions

To answer these questions, a group of Danish researchers from the University of Copenhagen recently conducted an extensive study on stressful social relations and mortality. The results were published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

The study revealed that frequent anxiety and demands coming from one’s own spouse or children were associated with a 50 to 100% increase in death from all causes. But, when such worries turned into serious conflict, the numbers skyrocketed.

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-images-mom-overwhelmed-kids-fight-caucasian-blonde-foreground-lloking-camera-bathrobe-holding-head-frustration-image31173364Frequent conflicts in the home increased one’s mortality risk 2 to 3 times! Interestingly, when such close social conflicts were coupled with unemployment or underemployment, the risk of death from all causes increased even more!

Personally, I have to wonder if poor eating habits, fast-fix pharmaceuticals, and a general lack of exercise and healthy living contribute to these numbers. Still, there is no doubt that familial stress contributes to poor health.

An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression. (Proverbs 29:22)

Stress has been linked to a number of physical challenges, including depression, anxiety, heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, certain cancers, multiple sclerosis, lower immune system, adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems, and more. It is especially troubling to consider that the source of the most damaging stress might be found in one’s own household.

Simply stated, a life of stress and debt can be hazardous to your health!

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a fatted calf with hatred. ~ Proverbs 15:17

But, there is help! Dr Rikke Lund, with the University of Copenhagen, said this when asked about the survey results, “Intervening in conflicts, particularly for those out of work, may help to curb premature deaths associated with social relationship stressors.”

Ways to help reduce stress in the family:

  • “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3) A living faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to find and maintain true peace.
  • Join a healthy church where you’ll find fellowship, accountability, help during trouble, spiritual growth, and weekly communion. As a Christian, the weekly corporate worship of God will strengthen you, and help to reduce tension and stress within yourself and in your family.
  • Pursue positive family interactions on a daily basis. This could begin by simply sitting down and eating dinner together. Many families are so dysfunctional that a common family meal is…well, very uncommon.
  • In addition to family prayer/worship, every member of a family should have a private time of prayer and devotion. Another recent study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology showed that daily prayer significantly reduced stress.
  • Play peaceful music in your home on a regular basis. Simple instrumental music can help reduce tension in the home. In contrast, certain music can increase the stress levels in a home.

Stress and Essential Oils
female holding (silk) rose petals up to her noseAnd, of course, we have found essential oils to be very helpful in creating a relaxing environment. We diffuse Frankincense and citrus oils on a regular basis. You can also diffuse various Young Living’s blends such as Joy, Stress Away, Harmony, or Transformation.

We use Peace and Calming on our children before they go to bed to help them settle down and get a good night sleep.  Also, Frankincense, Lavender, and Valor make great alternatives to cologne or perfume and actually help to bring a sense of calming – and many of those are in the Starter Kit!

And don’t forget Vetiver, which has been known to help overactive children relax. I use it myself when I’m feeling moody or overly emotional.

See Quieting the Mind with Vetiver.

Be proactive! We strive to utilize Young Living’s amazing supplements – supplements that are infused with essential oils to help support a healthy immune system. Ningxia Red is also a great choice, and it’s part of our regular morning routine.

Was Jesus Ever Stressed?

No one can avoid stress altogether; it is simply part of the human experience. Even Jesus, who was fully man and fully God, experienced the pain and stress of living in this fallen world. But take note:

Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of Spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. (John 12:3)

The first time I smelled Spikenard, I wasn’t sure what I thought. I detected the slight hint of Valerian, which I’m not overly fond of. I wondered if Jesus really enjoyed the aroma when Mary poured it on his feet. However, after learning more about the amazing benefits of essential oils, I had to wonder if what Jesus found pleasing had more to do with the scent of Mary’s motives, than it did the scent of the oil (Mark 14:9).

washingjesusfeetA relative of the Valerian family, Spikenard has the most powerful calming scent in aromatherapy. The properties of this precious oil have long been known.

“Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” Mark 14:9

I used to wonder why Mary chose Spikenard to anoint our Lord. Now, after learning more about this amazing oil, I suspect Mary’s feminine, nurturing spirit was attempting to lovingly bless and sooth our Lord before the trauma to come.

“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.” (2 Corinthians 2:14)

As we learn to walk “in the spirit,” we are more likely to avoid walking in the ways of stress; which, for us, is often simply a symptom of walking “in the flesh.” And, as I’ve shared here, there are physical ways (including the use of God’s gift of essential oils) that will help alleviate the ways we are daily tempted to give in to stressful living.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (Romans 8:5)

Earlier this month, James and I won a trip to Hawaii with Young Living. Part of our adventure included a visit to Young Living’s newest partner farm, the Háloa Áina Sandalwood forest on the island of Kona. The owners of this farm have a very encouraging and God-honoring mission to restore Sandalwood to the Hawaiian Islands.

While there were many things to enjoy on our trip, the visit to this particular farm was one of the highlights. As we walked around the farm, the intoxicating aroma of sandalwood was everywhere. James mentioned that he was tempted to lay face down in the wood chips for the rest of the day. I told him that would be weird.

What we experienced at the farm confirmed once again what makes Young Living unique, and why we only use these oils in our family. Young Living is not an essential oil broker, a company that simply buys random oils off the market, brands them, and packages them to sell to others. Sadly, almost every other company out there is just that.

GarySandalwoodFarm_1445788889_n

Rather, Young Living is a company that owns its own farms (on five continents), distills, tests, and prides itself on an exclusive “Seed to Seal” process that ensures the highest quality on the market.

Young Living also partners with select, exclusive farms around the world—those rare few who are committed to the same standard of quality that Young Living is known for, and who are willing to work together to uphold Young Living’s extraordinary standards. And that certainly describes the Háloa Áina organization.

Hawaii used to be known as the “Sandalwood Islands.” A very special species of sandalwood, Santalum paniculatum, was found in the mountains of this beautiful archipelago. However, during the 1800s, the sandalwood forests were depleted as a result of both greed and ignorance.

Once the Hawaiian royal family discovered the commercial value of sandalwood, this amazing evergreen was over-harvested. In addition, the introduction of foreign cattle and sheep by Europeans quickly turn the once dense forests into grazing land. Sandalwood almost became completely extinct in Hawaii.

18_SandalwoodTree

However, it is making a comeback, in part because of the faithful efforts of those involved in the Háloa Áina project. 2800 acres of lush land on the Big Island are now dedicated to establishing a sustainable sandalwood forest. It is an honor to be part of that vision.

Sandalwood is grown in other parts of the world, specifically in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and China. And Young Living does have other sources for sandalwood, partnering with similar farms committed to quality and purity.

The sandalwood tree is an evergreen that, when fully mature, reaches up to 50 feet in height. It flourishes in warm, dry climates; so the mountains of Hawaii are ideal for its healthy growth. Sandalwood is also native to areas in the Middle East and South Asia.

The sandalwood tree is known as a “parasitic tree,” which means that it receives the majority of its nutrients from the roots of other tress or plants. This means other trees need to be planted along side the sandalwood.

Sandalwood is mentioned in the Bible (often referred to as aloes or almugwood), and was used to make the railings in Solomon’s temple, as well as the harps and lyres for the musicians (1 Kings 10:12). It was also used by Nicodemus as part of the oil used to anoint the body of Jesus after His crucifixion (John 19:39). Sandalwood is also found in Young Living’s 12 Oils of Ancient Scripture collection.

James and Stacy – on location, discussing their sandalwood adventure…

2014-02-28 10.17.53The value of sandalwood oil has been known for centuries. Ornate, alabaster jars filled with the precious liquid were discovered in King Tutankhamen’s tomb by ancient thieves—thieves who stole the oil and left behind the beautiful jars, as well as precious gems and gold. The ancients knew their worth!

Sandalwood has a high concentration of sesquiterpenes. Sesquiterpenes are said to “deprogram” bad information/memory in preparation for the job monoterpenes do. They also help to support the limbic system.

RoyalSandalwood

Pure, therapeutic grade sandalwood is extremely moisturizing and nourishing to the skin. I apply it daily to smooth and brighten my skin.

Because of its rich, woody aroma, it has been used in the manufacture of valuable perfumes for centuries.

To enhance romance, sandalwood can be applied to the inner thighs, abdomen, neck, and rubbed into the hands and deeply inhaled.

However, because of its high demand, sandalwood is one of the most adulterated essential oils on the market. Unethical brokers often dilute pure sandalwood with cheaper carrier oils, synthetic fragrances, and/or solvents. The only use for such oils is perhaps in perfumery, but even then you have to ask yourself the question, “What am I really putting on my skin or inhaling into my lungs?”

Again, this is one of the reasons why we trust Young Living and their commitment to quality from seed to seal. Young Living understands not only how to grow healthy plants and trees; they also know how crucial it is to harvest them at just the right time to glean superior oil.

Sandalwood is a prime example. For those who are simply out for a quick buck, green trees are harvested well before their time; and the immature wood is distilled multiple times.

BabySandalwood

But, Young Living understands cultivation, harvesting, and distillation better than any company out there. They and their partner farms have found that the best sandalwood oil comes from trees that are in distress—trees that are undergoing trials.

Instead of harvesting green trees—young trees, Young Living waits for the trees to reach the end of their natural life, at a time when the highest percentage of oil is found in the root ball and in the heartwood of the tree.1656286_10203014739387921_846453743_n

The essential oil in sandalwood acts in a similar way to white blood cells in the human body: they get busy concentrating their efforts on saving the life of the tree by going to the heartwood, which is one of the two main parts of the tree that Young Living distills. The other is the root ball, which many companies throw out because of how inconvenient it is to clean  and prepare.

All of this is especially amazing, since it also happens to be consistent with responsible, sustainable harvesting. The result is the best sandalwood essential oil you can find on the market!

And, because of the way Young Living develops sustainable farms, its model is far more aligned with the biblical call to steward the resources of the earth. By helping to restore sandalwood to the Hawaiian Islands, the company is demonstrating its commitment to not only using the best possible base stock in the production of essential oils, they’re also showing that they are committed to developing and nurturing not only Sandalwood, but other wonderful gifts found in creation.

2014-02-27 17.49.37We have found sandalwood to be incredibly useful for our own family. It is a primary component of many of the recipes you can find here on the Common Scents Mom!

Island music, fresh papaya, soul-warming sunshine, breathtaking waterfalls and seascapes, and the scent of lush, tropical greenery, salty ocean, and coconut oil…we celebrated all five of our senses on our trip to Hawaii! God is so gracious to have given man the ability to experience life in ways that stir our emotions to such depths. It’s one of the reasons I love essential oils so much!

sunshinehawaii

But, I have to confess: before winning the trip to Hawaii, I wasn’t in favor of even going. While my husband kept an eager eye, multiple times a day, on our place in Young Living’s Drive to Win contest, I kept reminding him that we weren’t going, even if we won the trip.
1939658_10203000058420906_205176598_n

I pictured a painfully long plane ride (this part turned out to be true!), obnoxious commercialism, too much time away from the children, and the temptation to spend more money than we should. I also wasn’t in favor of sitting on a crowded beach with a bunch of naked tourists. Yes, this was pretty much the extent of how I pictured a Hawaiian vacation.

So, I can honestly say that I absolutely did not try to win this trip. We were just doing what we always do – sharing with others about the amazing benefits of essential oils and helping our team to do the same. But that alone resulted in ranking 19 out of the 60 Drive to Win winners. So, after looking into my husband’s eyes and seeing palm trees swaying in the wind, I agreed to go…to please him. What I didn’t realize was how much the trip would bless me too!

It was late evening in Kona when we arrived at the Hilton Waikoloa Village resort, so we decided to have a light dinner. We found a seaside restaurant at the resort and planned to share a salad and appetizer before heading to bed. We were surprised to be seated at a quiet outdoor table over looking the ocean. 1939442_10203025521137458_1842753097_n

It was a beautiful welcome to the island.

James and I had arrived a day early to acclimate ourselves to the time difference and to get to know our surroundings (okay, we just wanted an extra day of R&R). And the first thing we did was pick up the convertible Camaro we rented!

Thank you American Express points! Here is a clip taken a few days later showing how much we enjoyed the wind in our hair!

The picture below is the early morning view from our room.

EarlyMorningView

The early morning view from the balcony in our room.

Every breakfast at the resort was wonderful! Stuffed omelettes expertly prepared and other “regular” breakfast items, but my favorites included the sweet tropical fruit, guava juice, and rich Kona coffee. Wow! And fresh papaya may be my new favorite fruit of all time!

We enjoyed getting to know the whole management team better. Travis Ogden, chief operating officer, Jared Turner, chief sales and marketing officer, and others were attentive, warm, and confident. We left feeling very encouraged about the direction and leadership of the company!

2014-02-26 12.15.08Later, James and I jumped into the convertible and headed to Waipo Valley to enjoy the view. Wow! You could only go down the road in a 4-wheel drive (not even all-wheel drive allowed). We sure would have loved to explore the beach down there! But, alas, we had to enjoy from afar. We considered a hike, but my Tom’s weren’t up for the job! Maybe next time.

Later, at the resort, we visited with other distributors at a NingXia Red reception by the pool, after registration. It was fun getting to know other essential oil-lovers and hearing their stories. Amazingly, some of the winners were brand new to Young Living, starting mid-contest; and they still won the trip! This is really an amazing company with not only amazing products, but also amazing opportunities!

The next morning, we were greeted before breakfast with fresh-flower leis by a few members of the executive staff. So pretty! During breakfast, there was a lot of whispering about an upcoming “surprise.” I love surprises!

2014-02-27 17.49.37

There was much anticipation, until…finally! Travis announced that Young Living had gifted each of us with the coolest of cool shades…Maui Jim’s!

2014-02-27 17.10.32Decked out in our new shades, James and I drove to Hilo and visited Akaka Falls. So many beautiful sights! More photos HERE.

We enjoyed dinner in Hilo that evening and headed back to the resort for much needed rest.

The next morning was our sandalwood adventure. While the rest of the crew had fun on the buses winning great prizes and gleaning essential oil wisdom from Gary Young and others, James and I indulged in an open-air excursion–we made the trek to the farm in the convertible! Sometimes we’re rebellious like that.

Here’s a picture of us leading the bus pack! You can almost feel the breeze!

2014-02-28 10.17.53

Saturday, Young Living provided us with three options for adventure: snorkeling in the ocean, zipping down a ridiculously high zip line, or horseback riding through the mountains. We initially elected for the horseback riding, but later decided to simply relax at the resort and walk along the coastline. This proved to be a great decision, as we needed a day of rest.

While looking for a private spot to sit and watch the ocean, we discovered an empty cabana with an amazing view, equipped with two massage tables and two empty chairs!

2014-03-01 14.05.53

We determined that the cabana was probably set up for the resort’s spa, but since nobody was using the chairs, we sat down and enjoyed the privacy and the awesome view. Together, we rested there for hours, sipping tropical drinks, enjoying the sound of crashing waves, and inhaling the salty aroma of the great Pacific.

As the afternoon waned, James noted what seemed to be a small path meandering along the ocean shoreline. We decided to follow it for a while. It took us off the resort property as it twisted south along the Pacific. The shoreline was filled with black and white volcanic rock from an ancient eruption of perhaps Mauna Loa, which just happens to be the largest volcano on the earth!

1957649_10203020436650349_163611946_o

Perhaps because of the rocks or lack of modern amenities, most of the tourists ignored this beautiful path, electing instead to gather around the artificial pools and well-stocked bars. So, to our surprise, we discovered our own private beach – our own tropical paradise! We enjoyed some time walking in the ocean water, our feet sinking into white sand. The water was so warm, so refreshing; and the view was simply breathtaking!

There are so many things we could share! We experienced the camaraderie of Young Living, the beauty of the Big Island, and the intimate bonding  time that is so crucial in a good marriage. But most of all, we rediscovered the reality of God’s providence. We had long conversations where we marveled over all that God has done in both of our lives – all that He has brought us through. And we celebrated as we realized that so many of our dreams for the future are becoming a reality.

Not only is God using Young Living to bless our family with health, He is opening up a new door for us financially. We love the way it is quickly becoming a “generational business” for each of our adult children. Not only do we all have our own individual businesses, they are intricately tied together in a unified organization through the business model of relationship marketing.

God has blown us away with the growth of The Common Scents Mom. Every month, we are more and more amazed by how much larger and faster our Common Scents team is expanding! Every. Single. Month.

1901762_10203025522497492_379182078_nI guess it’s the law of multiplication, but it just keeps getting better. And what that means for our team is that our Common Scents families, many of them one-income, Christian homeschooling families, are experiencing a financial freedom they never thought they would have! I love that! As I shared HERE, this is the most homeschool-friendly business we could have ever imagined!

Check out this vignette of what all 60 Young Living Drive to Win contest winners experienced in Hawaii. Young Living will announce a new contest on March 15! Maybe you’ll be the next winner!
